The Issues
Buncombe County must face our challenges with balanced leadership from the Board of Commissioners. As Chairman, there are a number of important needs for which our scarce resources need to be directed to find solutions.
My top three priorities if I am re-elected as chairman will be:
- Jobs: I will continue to work for a balanced economy that is not overly dependent on just any one of the traditional sectors of tourism, healthcare, or manufacturing. I will work diligently to attract high-tech firms to our area and make sure that the employers we do have here aren’t scared off by excessive regulation and radical anti-business sentiment. In Buncombe County, small business is big business. I’ll continue to fight for them.
- Affordable Housing: I will make sure that our tax and regulatory policies do not get in the way of allowing folks at any income level the ability to buy and own a safe and affordable home.
- Workforce Skills: I will make sure that our citizens have the necessary skills to compete in a global economy. We must reduce our dropout rate, increase enrollment in the high-demand vocational programs at AB Tech and do whatever it takes to get workers to address workforce skill gaps, which will lead to higher income levels.
